Portal Fever Hits Hong Kong NOW

Hong Kong's Pacific Century Cyberworks (PCCW) hit the competitive China portal market with a vertical Internet portal, or "vortal," called NOW.com that seeks to attract both desktop PC-users with living room TV-watchers.

In a week when Beijing-based Netease.com becomes the third Chinese Web portal to list on the NASDAQ exchange, the launch of Now.com signals the intent of Hong Kong-based Internet players to play catch-up.

Also this week, Tom.com went live after a suspenseful wait following their monster IPO in May on the GEM exchange in Hong Kong. (more)

The CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Center) reports are released twice a year, and are currently the most authoritative source of statistical information on Internet use in China.

    Interactive Audience Measurement Asia (iamasia) said there were 12.3 million Internet users in China by April 2000. Based in Hong Kong, the company uses phone surveys and user panels in China.

    Spotlight on China's Top Portals
    Sina.com Sina.com was the brainchild of three students at Stanford University: Sinanet.
    It's now China's most popular Web site, according to official surveys (review).

    163.com Netease is the most "Chinese" of China's
    top portals. Run by an all-Chinese management team, Netease is also well known for its auction service (review).

    Sohu.com Sohu.com, China's #3 Web portal, built its name on its search function: "Sohu" comes from the word "Souhu," which means "search fox" in Chinese. (review).
